Super Mario Bros. auctioned off for 660.000$

Super Mario Bros. broke the previous record for the highest price ever paid for a video game when it sold for $660,000 at Heritage Auctions‘ Comics & Comic Art Auction on Friday. That’s about 559,000 euros.

The game, which appeared on the market in 1986, was sold in the United States of America at auction on 02.04.21. The last record was 156,000 US dollars in November 2020.

The classic Nintendo video game was bought as a Christmas gift in late 1986, but ended up in a desk drawer, where it remained untouched for 35 years before being discovered earlier this year. “It’s stayed in the drawer of my office desk all this time since the day I bought it,” the seller said. “I never thought anything of it.”  (Source: Heritage Auctions)

In addition, he said, this copy was one of the earliest produced and had a plastic shrink wrap instead of a sticker. This, added to the fact that it was completely unopened, makes the game a valuable collectible.

Heritage Auction reports in a press release.
