Every week, the German Cultural Council publishes a report that summarizes the most important topics of the past few days and includes a statement by its executive director, Olaf Zimmermann. In the current report for calendar week 47, Zimmermann is critical of the politics of the past pandemic months.
In it, he doesn’t mince words, writing, “The structural failure of politics in the corona crisis robs me of sleep at night.” He goes on to criticize the ignorant handling of politics when the pandemic was brewing and details the many lives that fell victim to the virus. The government’s communication is not spared either and is described by Olaf Zimmermann as “Orwellian verbiage.”
Referring to the currently rising infection figures among younger and also vaccinated people, he writes: “It is the central task of the state to protect its citizens. This is the only reason why the state has a monopoly on the use of force. Politicians must set the state rules and have been failing miserably at this for the past two years.”
