The Metropolitan Museum turns 151 years old!

Amazed faces, world-famous artworks and the Manhattan skyline. It all began in 1870 with a group of people and a lot of ideas. A building was created – the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Now the museum celebrates its 151st birthday on the 13th of April 2021.

In 2020, the 150th anniversary was celebrated with 200 employees, 1.5 million exhibits and nearly 7 million visitors a year. Commenting on the anniversary, Austrian Director Max Hollein said, ” This is certainly an occasion to celebrate the achievements that have brought us to this moment. But it’s also an important occasion to reflect on the history of this institution, to examine the role of the Met today, and most importantly, to show where we’re headed.” To mark the anniversary, many rooms were redecorated and new works were presented. Hollein spent months commissioning curators to find works “that we don’t own, but that we want to own and that would transform our collection.” ,according to the director of the “Met.”

Google honors the “Met” today with an animated doodle by Google designer Erich Nagler. The Metropolitan Museum of Art can be seen, and various works of art are depicted above it.

As Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes the dust of everyday life from the soul.”
