The CPJ (Committee to Protect Journalists) released a report on the staggering number of 293 journalists imprisoned worldwide in 2021, an increase of 13 since 2020, highlighting the precarious situation around the world.
For the past two years, China has been the country with the highest number of imprisoned journalists, and this year, too, the country holds the top position with 50 imprisonments. China is followed by Myanmar, Egypt, Vietnam and Belarus. CPJ sees an increasing threat to press freedom, which is mainly due to those in power who want to secure their positions. Even though countries like Turkey and Saudi Arabia show a strong decrease in imprisonments, this does not indicate an improvement of the situation, but a successful intimidation and suppression of journalists, according to CPJ.
