HUTHevents – Emerging out of a crisis through creativity and high risk tolerance

Two hashtags describe the industry of HUTHevents most accurately: #firstinlastout and #redalert. This year, the established event technology and production company was confronted with unprecedented hurdles and took the leap into the unknown. This and other things were discussed by Lysander Huth and Jens Ziegenhardt and our host Timm Lindenau.

HUTHevents – Emerging out of a crisis through creativity and high risk tolerance

HUTHevents combines three brands for event production in Berlin Kreuzberg: HUTHevents, HUTHrental and HUTHcases. From planning and the sometimes unusual set-ups to the transport of sensitive objects, everything comes from a single source. The 10-person team around founder and managing director Lysander Huth works with verve and precision for the customers, because the feedback and appreciation of their customers is very important for everyone at HUTHevents. For company celebrations, shows, city festivals, anniversaries and concerts, Lysander and Jens Ziegenhardt, the man for the operative business at HUTHevents, have access to a large pool of freelancers so that there is enough power on site. And here, too, the two Berliners attach great importance to friendly, transparent communication with everyone involved.

SALES DROPS OF MORE THAN 95%

The events industry has experienced a boom in recent years and increased its turnover by 31% between 2013 and 2017 alone. As a result, there was more and more the “luxury” of having to cancel a customer because there was no capacity for another event in the annual planning. All trades in the event industry benefited from the continuing boom. However, since March of this year, the events industry has experienced a never-before-seen order stop. At HUTHevents, too, the phones ran hot in the first week after the shutdown and e-mail inboxes were rapidly filling up with cancellations and cancellations of planned events. No orders. No turnover. Waiting to see what would happen and taking out loans to pay salaries and fixed costs was out of the question for Lysander. Together with Jens Ziegenhardt he dealt with the applications for short-time work and subsidies. Two completely new topics for the two hands-on mentalists.  But this was not enough for Lysander and he looked for a solution for himself and all his employees.

The transition – THE new “NORMAL”

Lysander decided to take a bold step, because there is nothing worse for him than doing nothing, and ordered a machine for mask production from China. Within only 20 days everything had to be organised and the team had to be prepared. Not an easy task. Without further ado he brought Jens on board, founded maskenshop-berlin and got all employees out of short-time work. A sterile room with exhaust air systems was built in the workshop, where mainly the high-quality cases were produced before Corona. The employees supported their boss’s master plan from the outset and retrained in a very short time. Jens took over the sales department and quickly learned everything worth knowing about mask production and sales, and built up a sales team.

What HUTHevents does, will be done with verve and precision. This is why they do not produce normal masks, but masks certified by DEKRA as Corona Pandemie Atemschutzmasken (CPA), comparable to the FFPT2 standard. These protect the wearer and the people around him/her. A total of three months passed from the idea to the commissioning of the machine for mask production. And that was just the beginning. In our podcast you can hear about the tasks and obstacles Lysander, Jens and the team at HUTHevents were confronted with or still are, what helped them and how they see the future of the event industry.
