Performing Arts Festival Berlin 2021

Organizer: LAFT – Landesverband freie darstellende Künste Berlin e. V.

A lively independent scene conquers new artistic spaces
Over 60 productions from all genres of the independent performing arts present a diverse and inspiring panorama of current aesthetic as well as political developments at the “Program of the Scene” and negotiate social debates and discourses from queerfeminist, capitalist-critical and decolonial perspectives. The current longing for contact is reflected in the mutability, luminosity and fragility of a program that asks, “What does it look like, the space we live in?”

Around 100 applications for “Introducing…”
Through the newcomer platform, productions are presented that creatively deal with the conditions of the pandemic and find new artistic ways to safely bring audience and contributors into contact. Together with Ballhaus Ost, HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Sophiensæle and TD Berlin, we present selected productions and accompany the up-and-coming artist:s in their work. The final selection will be announced in April 2021.

Further highlights in planning
The festival week will start with a live broadcast of the “PAF Opening” from the Chamäleon Theater. Depending on the pandemic development, an “open-air festival garden” is planned at Circus Schatzinsel. Every day, selected events will be presented here as public viewing or offers for the professional audience on site. And “PAF Radio” will offer exciting listening experiences every morning with reports, anecdotes and outlooks for the upcoming festival day.

As part of “PAF Campus,” students from six different Berlin universities have the opportunity to discover the festival, its program and the various venues of the independent scene. The focus is on projects that explicitly make digitality a condition of their aesthetics and in which digital is an integral part of the work.

The “PAF & friends visit” enables an exchange with artists from six partner festivals from other German states (Performing Arts Festival Berlin, 6 tage frei, Hauptsache Frei, RODEO, FAVORITEN and IMPLANTIEREN) and the European festival network “Bridging the Scenes” meets to address current issues of international mobility.

With the “Audio Play Venue Tour” through Berlin
The “Audio Play Venue Tour” invites you to discover Berlin’s independent play venues. For more than a year, Berlin’s independent venues and theaters have been closed almost continuously. How does it feel to work behind closed doors? And what actually makes a theater of the independent scene? The individual contributions can be heard both directly on site at the venues, during the walk between the venues, and online on the festival website.

The official website can be found here.
