Organizer: Deutsche Filmakademie Produktion GmbH
The Deutscher Filmpreis – the most prestigious and highest endowed award for German film – is endowed with prize money from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media totaling nearly 3 million euros and is awarded by State Minister of Culture Prof. Monika Grütters after being voted on by the members of the Deutsche Filmakademie. The award ceremony is an event organized by the German Film Academy in cooperation with the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), produced by Deutsche Filmakademie Produktion GmbH.
The German Film Award 2021 will be presented on October 1. The reason for postponing the award ceremony from spring to fall is the impact of the Corona pandemic on the German film industry.
Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters justifies this decision:
“In the coming months, the Corona pandemic will continue to be a huge challenge for all cinemas, producers and distributors. For this reason, together with the German Film Academy, we have decided to hold the German Film Awards ceremony in the fall of 2021 rather than in the spring as usual. In this way, we are creating greater planning security for producers and distributors when submitting their films to the German Film Awards. We look forward to the coming year with hope – and are doing everything we can to support cinemas and the film industry in weathering and overcoming the crisis.”
Production and distribution companies can register their films in January for the selection process for the 2021 German Film Award. The exact date will follow shortly. The artistic direction of the gala on October 1 is in the best hands: The German Film Academy was able to win renowned producer Nico Hofmann as Artistic Director for next fall’s award ceremony.
