Funding budget for filmindustry doubled

The German Motion Picture Fund (GMPF) – a funding program of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM) – supports the production of high-quality TV and VoD series as well as films. For 2021, the annual funding budget available has been increased from 15 to 30 million euros. This increase in federal funding is intended to attract film entertainment productions to Germany, strengthen the competitive and innovative power of Germany as a film location and encourage producers to produce new and creative formats.

Eligible to apply are producers or co-producers based or established in Germany who have already produced a film or series within the last five years.

The following are eligible for funding, according to the official website:

– fictional series with a running time of at least 240 minutes per season,
– documentary series with a running time of at least 180 minutes per season,
– Feature films with a running time of at least 79 minutes (or 59 minutes for children’s films).

Minimum production costs must also be as follows:

– fictional series with a minimum budget of €30,000 per minute or €1.2 million per episode and €7.2 million per season,
– documentary series with minimum production costs of €9,000 per minute or €360,000 per episode and €1.65 million per season, with a per-minute cost of €7,000,
– VoD movies must have total production costs of at least €25 million.

It should be noted that the German production costs of the project must account for at least 40 percent of the total production costs. The amount of the grant is based on the approved German production costs and is capped at €2.5 million. For series, a grant of up to €4 million can be awarded.
