Award-winning actress and photographer June Newton, aka Alice Springs, former wife of the photographer Helmut Newton and president of the Helmut Newton Foundation, died April 9th, 2021, in her home in Monte Carlo at the age of 97. This was announced by the Helmut Newton Foundation on its website.
When she met the world-famous photographer Helmut Newton in Melbourne in her mid-twenties and married him a year later, she was first a muse and manager for him. In the seventies, however, she began her own photography career when her husband was unable to attend a booked photo shoot for the cigarette brand Gitanes due to flu. She quickly learned photography and took a portrait of a model smoking for her husband. This picture was the beginning of her great career. Under the pen name Alice Springs, she became internationally known as a portraitist and photographer.
She photographed for magazines like Dépêche Mode, Elle, Marie-Claire, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Stern and many more.
